Katrina del Mar is a New York-based art and commercial photographer, as well as an award winning filmmaker. Her work has been described as "beautiful" exuding an "intimate chemistry" and also as "filth of the highest quality." Katrina herself has been described as a "major league cutie," "a wild woman," "the Lesbian Russ Meyer," and "apparently, the lesbian stepchild of Kenneth Anger."
Her visual style leans toward lush, vivid colors and moody black and white. Her tone is at once reverent and funny, tender and in your face.
Katrina directs and produces independent films, has produced television for the internet, while also covering the world of group and solo gallery shows, club installations, media design, production and publishing.
Katrina's first film, Gang Girls 2000, shot entirely on super 8mm film, received a 4 & a half star review in Film Threat Magazine, and received glowing reviews from the press, inviting comparisons to the legendary Kenneth Anger.
The follow up, Surf Gang about a gang of women surfers from Rockaway Beach in New York City, landed Katrina a prestigious Fellowship in Video from the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and Best Experimental Film Award from the Planet Out Short Movie Awards announced at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006, and was screened at the Museum for Contemporary Art (CAPC) in Bordeaux, France.
Katrina del Mar served as studio manager from late 2006 to late 2008 for legendary art photographer Nan Goldin, who has described Katrina's work as "radical" and "ground-breaking."
Katrina was invited in the spring of 2009 to present a program of her short films in Sydney, Australia at the Perv Queerotic Fest. She took Katrina del Mar Movie Mayhem onto further screenings in Auckland, New Zealand and Atlanta, Georgia. (at MondoHomo Queer Arts Festival)
Katrina continues to write, and photograph and to produce and direct films. Her latest film project; Hell on Wheels, Gang Girls Forever just completed in May 2010 was screened at the Brattle Theatre in Boston and will be screened at Frameline 34 in San Francisco June 2010.
A solo gallery show called Gangs of New York will be presented in June 2010, in Porto Portugal.
As a freelance photographer, her client list includes Sony Music, Island Records, Polygram, V2 Records, London Records, Time Out New York, People Magazine, Alternative Press, Mademoiselle, and the NYPost.
As an artist, Katrina has shown her work at Deitch Projects, The Museum for Contemporary Art (CAPC) in Bordeaux, France, American Fine Arts Company, Binz 39 in Switzerland, the Bass Museum of Art in Miami, the Miami Light Project, P.S. 122 in New York City, Wrong Weather Gallery in Porto Portugal, and the University of Cardiff in Wales.
