Image is Everything, After All. To all burgeoning New York City bands desiring street cred: wake up, you need a promo photo. You need a photo that will capture you at your rock n roll best, making you look for all the world like a glamorous junkie. So even if you have to get the dough from your parents in Connecticut (don't worry, we wont tell anybody they're still alive) or your bandmates all chip in their pot money, go to Katrina del Mar at once and let her shoot you.

Because she's the best, and she'll make you look cool. She's lensed everybody from the Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black to the Lunachicks, and many other bands in between that are probably better than yours. She has a great eye for color and composition -all self taught- and with a punk background herself, she knows what you're going for. You probably won't even have to tell her. Just put on your best wifebeater, tell her where to meet you (she may charge cabfare) and pose away. Do them in the park if you want the "We're from New York, this is where we score" vibe. Or, if the sunlight is too harsh for your delicate nightcrawler skin, you can go to her studio and pose against one of her seamless backdrops. Whatever, she'll have you looking tough, dangerous, and almost as if you can actually play your instruments (if that's what you're going for).

She's perceptive and whatever it is that makes you unique, she'll find it and bring it to the light. Prices vary for her sevices-she'll charge more if if you have major label cash backing you, but indie stuff she tries to do on the down low, and she's willing to negotiate. The best thing about Katrina is that although she's a friendly person with a relaxing presence, she's above all else a professional. You're really not going to be happy if you try to pass off some stupid photo-booth shots as your band's calling card, and since Katrina's around, you no longer have to.
