SURF
GANG (working title)
Katrina del Mar - Director, Producer.
INTRODUCTION
"Surf Gang" is a 20 minute experimental narrative film shot on
digital video and Super8mm film, on location in New York City and Southampton,
New York. The completed film will have elements and themes involving violence,
nature, artifice, and mystery; all wound up in the package of a fantastic
modern day fable about the exploits of the Rockaway Ruffnecks, a deadly and beautiful group of women who surf
together, ride together and kick ass together.
The film is primarily in color with some black & white, and will use still
pictures, music, narration and dialogue to move the story along in a dynamic
and arresting way. The film will be edited into digital video and Beta SP.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
"Surf Gang" is a 20 minute experimental narrative film about the
turf war that erupts when a gang of tough girls travel out of their home
territory of working class Rockaway Beach and arrive in the luxurious Hamptons The
Rockaway Ruffnecks, led by
diminutive wildcat, Baby Rockaway,
with their pirate flag flying and their rock n roll blaring, roll up into a
world of ease and wealth made abrasive to outsiders. The local surfer girls
call themselves the Ungratefuls,
and are led by Blossom, an aging
surfer girl who years ago reigned the seas, but who now lives in semi
retirement and cocktail stupor in her gothic mansion overlooking the ocean. "Surf
Gang" takes a satirical and
sometimes slapstick view of class difference in a world of both natural
beauty and fantastic embellishment.
The film is shot on Digital Video and Super8mm film, in color and black &
white, and will use still pictures, music, narration and dialogue to move the
story along.
I conceived the idea for this project in late July of 2003 while spending some time in the Southampton New York, a beach town for the rich and the people who work for them. I was speaking with a group of new friends there, surfers and artists, and they asked me to film them surfing, and asked when I was going to make another girl gang movie. I announced that I would make a film that would incorporate, or rather smash together, the two genres of surf movie and gangster film.
When I spoke to surfers and surf shop owners
I kept hearing the same phrase over and over: "there's not too many
girls who surf."
I decided to portray a somewhat idealized world that I seem to expect, where
lots of women exist not as the girlfriends and afterthoughts to the exploits of
men, but as vital protagonists in
a rich and strange story involving action, trust, high kicks, surfing, music,
violence and humor.
